The Nefuris

It is not only the bond of marriage that connects us, we are connected by LOVE – The Nefuris
Witnessing the marriage of two people who love each other a lot is a beautiful event. One of the most precious parts of the wedding itself is when the couple agrees to unite their lives forever, that is when they become one. It is not everyone who gets an invite to a wedding; thus, UniQ Magazine Team goes around witnessing same sex marriages and comes back to share the love journey with its readers. Our very own, Asante Lala had a chat with newlyweds Mpho and Thandeka Nefuri.
1. While most of South Africans closed the year 2022 spending their hard-earned cash on different things, you decided to close the year by tying the knot. We are curious to know where did you meet for the first time and where was your first date with your partner?
We first met on social media, chatted for a while and that led to us to dating until the opportunity for us to meet for the first time in Durban presented itself.
2. What attracted you to each other?
Thandeka: Her confidence, her appearance and sense of intelligence, that was when I knew I have found a home for my heart.
Mpho: Her contentment, her strong spirituality, she is the most focused person and family oriented.
4. Getting married was probably the biggest step you’ve taken in this relationship, where did the courage from?
We officially got married in 2018. We then agreed not to be under any pressure for a big wedding. We waited for this period as we were more content and sure of our devotion. Our wedding was just to celebrate the journey we have travelled. We will celebrate more of our journey in different forms.
5. I am sure it was time consuming planning your wedding. Did you hire a wedding planner? If not, how did you go about organising it?
We planned the wedding ourselves. Planning a 2-day event was no child’s play but we wanted every detail included accordingly. The wedding was planned over 3 months.
6. Did you opt for the lobola ritual route? If yes, share the experience in a few words.
Yes…it was a new experience as Zulus and Vendas met. The parents and uncles handled it well. They learned few tricks and it was fun. There was the stress of not having male representations as it’s always expected as per lobola negotiations yet we felt so blessed with the matriarchs being part of the proceedings and everything went really well, the report back from those in attendance was positive and very interesting.

7. Which song played when you walked down the aisle?
Thandeka: 047 Wenungowami
Mpho: Count on me
8. Where did you guys go for honeymoon?
Still planning
9. Do you plan to have children together and how?
Yes. Adoption. We have been brainstorming on adopting twins as we have tried many times with no luck.
10. Are there any fun games you love playing together? What are they?
Thandeka: Pool
Mpho: She is impatient with games
11. Who is your favourite lesbian couple and why?
Mpho and Thandeka. They live beyond challenges. Against all odds.
12. Finish the sentence:
Getting married to my partner was……
Thandeka: It gave me a sense of belonging fully especially the lobola part; getting isidwaba from The Nefuri cow which is known as income kamakoti created a special element all together. My Mother in-law gave me a Venda name Tshinawo (The Beautiful one), this warmed up my heart.
Mpho: A confirmation that God lives. Our marriage is made in heaven and we confirmed it on earth.
