PRIDE MONTH #igniteyourfire

Durban to commemorate this year’s PRIDE under the theme #igniteyourfire in line with the international theme – Peace and Love Revolution

As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, Gay Pride holds a profound significance in my life. It serves as a powerful reminder of the journey we have undertaken to achieve acceptance, equality, and liberation. This year, the theme of peace, love, and revolution emerges as a guiding light, embodying the essence of our collective struggle for justice and inclusion.

Gay Pride, with its theme of peace, love revolution in 2023, holds profound meaning to me. It embodies our journey towards self-acceptance, unity, and justice. While Pride Month in South Africa may be celebrated in October, the anticipation of joining the global celebration in June fills us with excitement.

Gay Pride to me is more than just a colourful parade or a month of festivities. It is a testament to the resilience and courage of the LGBTQ+ community. It is a time to celebrate our identities and the beautiful diversity that exists within our community. Pride enables us to embrace our true selves, to affirm our identities, and to reject the shame and stigma that society may have imposed upon us. It is a moment of empowerment, where we stand tall and unapologetically express our authentic selves.

Love is at the heart of the LGBTQ+ experience. Pride celebrates the love that transcends gender norms, societal expectations, and cultural boundaries. It is a celebration of love in all its diverse manifestations, whether it be romantic, platonic, or self-love. Love knows no boundaries, and Pride serves as a reminder that we all have the capacity to love and be loved, regardless of our sexual orientation or gender identity. By promoting love, acceptance, and empathy, Pride paves the way for a more inclusive and compassionate society.

Pride embraces the spirit of activism, inspiring us to challenge oppressive systems, policies, and attitudes. It encourages us to raise our voices, demand justice, and work towards a world where LGBTQ+ individuals have equal rights, representation, and opportunities. Pride reminds us that the fight for equality is ongoing, and that revolution is necessary to dismantle the barriers that hinder our liberation.

As we commemorate the struggles and victories of the LGBTQ+ community, let us continue to embrace peace, love, and revolution, forging a brighter, more inclusive future for all.

This year’s Durban Pride hosted by the Durban Lesbian and Gay Health Centre, will be celebrated under #igniteyourfire. According to the Director of the Centre, Nonhlanhla Mkhize, last year’s focus was on Repurposing Pride, while this year all energies are directed to re-igniting the fire within and fight for human rights.

Pride is set to take place at the Amphitheatre from 10h00 to 22h00 with the Parade from 13h00 to 15h00 starting from the Amphitheatre to Ushaka Marine and back to the Amphitheatre for the Festival.
